Nesso is located approximately half way between Como and Bellagio, and the the drive from the outskirts of Como takes about 20 minutes. It has a natural charm, nestling between steep wooded mountains and the lake shore. A notable feature is the waterfall, Orrido di Nesso, which can be viewed in all its glory from the roman bridge, used in Alfred Hitchcock's 1925 film The Pleasure Garden. There are good opportunities for cycling, water sports and mountain walks, and an ancient road, the Strada Regia, passes through the village as it winds its way from Como to Bellagio.
There are several small shops in Nesso - the nearest one being around 30 seconds from the front door of La Vista - several small local bars, and a restaurant, the Tre Rose, which has a large veranda, good views, good pizza, and is only 2 minutes walk from the house.
Buses run from Nesso up to the mountain village of Zelbio - a great starting point for walks - and between Como and Bellagio, linking it with all the villages in between. At Bellagio, as well as the numerous restaurants and boutique shops, there are car and passenger ferries to Varenna, Cadenabbia and Menaggio, allowing the possibility to travel further north on the lake, should you wish to. |
One of the most attractive features of Nesso in the warmer months is the paved 'beach', approximately four minutes walk from La Vista. Steps make entering and exiting the lake easy and elegant, if you don't fancy diving in, and there is a refreshing fresh water shower for after your swim. It is also possible to swim from the steps near the roman bridge, go under it and then swim and wade up to the waterfall. Passenger ferries zig-zag up and down the lake, calling at Nesso on the way. Ferry times are available here.
For good walks and spectacular views of the lake, take the ferry over the lake to Argegno (about ten minutes) and the cable car up to the mountain village of Pigra, which is visible from La Vista. |
